Upon admission to the Bars of the State of Connecticut and New York in 1986 and 1987, Ms. Brown began her legal career as a special investigative attorney for the City of New York. After relocating to Connecticut, she entered private practice and thereafter accepted a position with Connecticut Legal Services (CLS). During her tenure, Ms. Brown became very active in the legal issues of the elderly and became the Elder Law Specialist in the Waterbury office of CLS. In 1994, she opened the Law Office of Julia M. Brown. Based in Waterbury, Connecticut she serves clients in the greater Waterbury area and surrounding communities and has accepted representation of clients throughout the state.
Attorney Brown focuses her practice on issues involving estate planning, medical and financial planning, probate matters, personal injury and real estate. She counsels clients on Medicaid (Title 19) eligibility and preservation of assets, planning for the disabled, home care planning and other options, nursing home admission & discharge and issues of substandard nursing home care, alternative housing, long term care and other insurance options, conservatorship and capacity, tax planning, and financial trustee and management services.
She is a member of: the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys; National Elder Law Foundation; CBA Elder Law section; CBA Estates and Probate Law Section; and National Citizen's Coalition for Nursing Home Reform.
Ms. Brown is an active speaker on legal and financial issues concerning the elderly and the disabled to various professional and business organizations including the Connecticut Bar Association, Waterbury Bar Association, Department of Social Services, AARP Chapters, Connecticut Nurses Association, Area Agency on Aging, hospital social work and discharge personnel, senior centers, nursing homes, home care agencies, Alzheimer's and other care-giver support groups as well as her own in-house "straight talk" series.
Prior to her legal career, Ms. Brown received a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and served in a variety of positions within health care institutions where she discovered her interest in the elderly and her desire to understand and assist the elderly and their families resolve care issues. It was these experiences and her personal experience with her grandmother's terminal illness that led her to pursue a career in law and to advocate for the elderly and their families.
Combining years of practical experience with a Bachelor's degree in plant and operations management, Mr. Brown quickly moved through the ranks advancing to positions in executive management. Known as a problem solver, he took on special projects and found his talent for resolving complex issues. He developed a broad range of managerial skills including diversified financial responsibilities.
After helping turn around several businesses, Mr. Brown began his small business consulting practice. Over the years, he has counseled hundreds of entrepreneurs and helped launch dozens of successful businesses.
In order to provide more extensive financial services, Mr. Brown completed studies in Accounting and Financial Planning and became a Certified Public Accountant, passing the CPA examination in the first sitting.
After several years as an accountant to small businesses in one of Connecticut's premier accounting firms, Mr. Brown started his own accounting practice in 1996 and continues to provide management and tax services to business clients and estate, tax and personal financial planning for individual clients.
